16. Socially Awkward ?

Socialization is a learning that enables the learner to perform social roles.”

Socialization is the foundation on which human interaction is based. Through socialization, one gets to learn new things about different cultures and also helps us to explore ourselves by communicating with different people. Socializing is a lifelong process which helps us to build confidence. Some people are not confident and comfortable enough to interact or socialize with others, as they think they will goof up. There are certain things we should remember while communicating with people for an immediate effect.

  • Take the first step- One should always initiate the conversation by quitting the habit of being a loner at a corner. Initiating the conversation makes a person look more confident and approachable.
  • Patient listener- A person looks acceptable when they are good listeners. People like to talk about themselves and are attracted to those who are ready to listen. Listening helps us in understanding a person better and we also get to learn from their experiences.
  • Be comfortable with yourself- While socializing with people, we should be comfortable with ourselves as it shows our confidence. We should never pretend like someone else and be who we are.
  • Avoid immediate judgements- While interacting with someone new we should avoid making judgements without knowing that person and their story.
  • Look approachable- It is important to look approachable as it helps people to interact more comfortably with us.
  • Not everyone can be pleased- No matter how much we try, improve or do things we cannot please everyone we interact with. It should be taken as an interesting part because not everyone can get along with everyone.
  • Experience is the best teacher- Socialising is a good source of learning. Through socialising we meet people who will help us, while others can be of no use. But there is no harm in meeting new people because their past experience can be a learning for our future.

According to my experience, interaction and socialising with people is really important as it helps us to learn and explore the unexplored. If you don’t converse with people you are missing out on great opportunities.

11. PR Professionals can turn Raavan into Ram

Not being a mythology book lover, I was less interested in listening to the speech of a particular author named Devdutt Pattanaik at Praxis8. Praxis is an event where keynote speakers come up on stage to talk to the fraternity of public relations and corporate communications. It is a summit where people share and learn from each others’ experiences. This author is known for his work in mythology and interpretations of ancient Indian stories, symbols, and rituals.

His speech of 40 minutes at Praxis changed my whole perspective on mythological books and created interest in me to read his books. In his speech, Pattanaik touched upon various topics and supported them by giving the example of Hindu Gods. He says that reputation is a stain that can’t be washed away. It is all about the perception and has got no connect with the facts. He suggests that to have good communication, we should start listening more than speaking. The problem nowadays is that people listen less and want to keep their words first. He supports this by giving a reference from Ramayana, ‘Dhobi (God) is listening to us always but we are not communicating with him’.

He raises a question to the audience and asks ‘Where should one focus more – professionalism or personal life?’ He differentiated between the both by giving the example of Ramayana where he says that Ram was a remarkable king who worked for his people and not a person who was involved in his personal life which made him let go off his wife Sita. He says, in the same way a professional should work hard than giving their main focus on personal life.

Pattanaik defines the job of a PR professional by saying that PR professionals have the capability to turn Raavan into a Ram through their set of skills. Yet not everyone require a PR to get them fame like Bramha the creator. He ends his speech by saying Ganesha is his and everyone’s favourite God as he has got two set of teeth, one to show it to everyone and the other one which he actually uses to chew.

10. A talk by Barri Friedman Rafferty

The topic for this year Praxis8 was “Building trust is at the core of Public Relations”. We got to listen to lot of speakers where we learned a lot of things about the Public Relation field. One of the keynote speakers at the event was Barri Friedman Rafferty the CEO and President at Ketchum’s global office.

Barri spoke about the left and the right side of the brain and how important it is to deliver the communication to get good results. She says that the left and the right side of the brain paradigm, where the right side of the brain works on data and the left on the creativity. She pointed out that the world is changing dramatically and disruptive technologies are coming every day which is evolving the targeting audience.

According to a data of 2019 highlighted by Barri, in a single minute 118 mails are sent, 41 million web messages are sent and 4.5 million videos are exchanged. We live in a multi-screen, multi-channel and multi influence e-commerce space. With all this exchange, the human have 7seconds span of attention which is less than the span of a gold fish.

Barri says that to get the attention of the people we need to apply the combination of both our right and left brain, by using analytics to derive creativity. Critical thinking is an indicator of 20% growth. “Creativity: Show, not tell”- Barri Rafferty Visual content is very powerful in conveying the message to the target audience.

She discussed some brilliant campaigns done by Ketchum and gave examples to prove her points, like National Safety Council- Prescribed to death, Discover Puerto Rico- #CoverTheProgress, Jameson called #LoveByTheBar.

Barri concluded her speech by saying that, good strategic planning can lead to changes in the mindset of the people and it is important to understand the target audience in a new way.

Trust is important in public relations because trust built in the consumer helps to build the brand goodwill.
